The concept of the Best Gift Foundation came into being after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in November 2013. Over 6,000 people lost their lives and certain areas in the Southern Philippines were totally devastated. Upon hearing about the catastrophe, active and concerned parents of children attending the International Montessori School (“IMS”) in Hong Kong wanted to help. The IMS School community came together and and raised enough to purchase three fishing boats for families in Leyte, the area most heavily damaged by the typhoon.
After more information after the typhoon emerged – 3,771 schools extensively damaged or destroyed and 126,000 children deprived of any ongoing education – the Foundation was born and it’s focus defined. The Best Gift Foundation raises funds to help underprivileged children enjoy as full an education as possible in a safe environment so that they can look forward to a better future. We believe that if children have a conducive place for learning with duly skilled teachers, that they have the best chance possible for a better future.
Our early years saw fund raising activities focus on building classrooms in partnership with the Filipino charity “Children’s Hour” who managed all the local logistical matters. As we have grown larger and to remain as efficient as possible, from 2017, we will also be building classrooms independently and overseeing directly controlled educational and health programs.
